Wisconsin River Draw Down

Wisconsin River draw down

Wisconsin River, Stevens Point, Wis.,
river lowered 9 feet for dam repairs. This hasn't happened ever on this stretch of river.
These pictures are near the lowest levels reached on Sunday Aug 17 2008
( Water levels returned back to normal about Aug 25.)

There were about 100 people walking the sand and rocks exploring the new' beach'.
Normally, this is covered by water all the way to the edge of green trees and grass.

. . . and note there is still a retaining berm on the west / left, a whole mile north of the dam.

A newspaper article says the rock piles are from the lumbering years,
log booms between piles held logs waiting to be sawed.
Some people mentioned they never knew these obstructions were just a few feet under the water
where they were boating at 50 mph on the Fourth of July.

A local historian mentioned that long ago
before the current water levels,
there was a box factory
(south of Highway 10)

and a button factory,
where buttons were made from clam shells.
