Snow Jet

Snow Jet

A re-post web page from 2004. I've seen the jet from a distance once since then, but never got another picture.

At the Stevens Point depot, Wisconsin. Snowed again last nite, another 3", and there's over 10 inches total on the ground. This is the second time I've seen them use the jet turbine here, but the first time I ever got pictures. Lucky to see them near Water Street, in front of the depot.
A nice thanks to the CN-WC, and Mother Nature, for such an interesting snow-show.

Nozzle can move, here it is up. Also swings side to side about 30 degrees. The two red targets must help them aim it. While warming up the turbine, the wind will rustle the oak leaves on that tree alongside the right-of-way. Can see the heat waves roll, and can hear the jet turbine whine from blocks away.
Unit has a diesel engine (for propulsion, and maybe to get the turbine spinning before ignition?). First the diesel is revved up, then the turbine runs maybe 1/4 speed, and can see heat waves roll. Then throttle up.

Nozzle down, and turbine throttled up

Jet. A lot faster than using a shovel and broom to clean switches.

Travel to and fro about 3 passes at a few mph, and the track is clean.
Of course, a thin layer of snow and dirt covers everything else for a hundred feet around.
