Wind towers
These high-wide loads came through Stevens Point, and though it's not the first time they came through, it was the first time I've seen them.

I've also collected notes from rail groups and put them here to record a more complete story.

notes from the 'west'

This block of cars made up most of 406's train (New Brighton-Point). They come through periodically and make up about half of the train at times. I haven't been able to photo them yet myself. Nice to see pictures, I was wondering where they were going, I wonder too where they originate. Dean S

This train came out of Stockton, Ca and was routed on BNSF's high line thru Montana. Possibly because of clearance issues on any other route. Pat

and SURPRISE
THERE'S MORE
Could have made better pictures if I saw this in the open with more sunlight. Just lucked into seeing this after work. 10 minutes later and I would never have known. My 'chase' of this was 2 blocks and he was just accelerating from 5 mph. At first glance through the trees at a blue tarp, I thought there was just one wide load

.
. . . they just keep coming, with no end in sight.

. . . . . Door on tower

Some cars are placarded HIGH WIDE,
and they are not so high, but they do hang beyond the car sides by a foot and a half.

.

(45) cars of these passed,
then came some general freight (reported to be 60 cars).

I thought that was the end of the special loads,
and drove west to get to the street before the gates went up and the traffic jam would break loose.

And to my surprise, there were (15) more cars on the end of the train carrying tower taper sections.

Other people's notes from wisrail and WCinfo

The train was A416. Point to Green Bay. The train came into Green Bay around 2200 and had 60-65 windmill cars.

That windmill train went through downtown Appleton on its way to Green Bay about 2130 on Monday. It was at the south end of Neenah from about 1800 until 2100 while the locomotives ran around it and a couple of other trains snuck by.

45 loads of tower parts, then 60 cars of other general freight, typical for trains on that line and then 15 more cars of tower parts. Impressive, interesting train.

Over the past six months or so I (Dave) have been seeing the Oakland Yard full of these windmill parts. They are brought in by rail and off loaded onto trucks for the final leg of their trip. The trains must have always come in under the cover of darkness as this was the first time I noticed this train come in from Neenah.

Talking to the conductor he said they were bound for an area down near Fond du Lac. Green Bay had the only area around large enough to handle 77 cars of parts, a couple of cranes, and semi trucks.

see pictures of the December wind mill train in Green Bay on daves pictures on his flicker site. See the album near the bottom of that page.

. . to be erected at . . Eden... south of Fond du Lac....interestingly they ship them from MN to GB through Neenah and up to the old Intermodal yard at GB then load them on trucks, take them south on I 43 to Sheboygan and head west towards Plymouth and wind on down through the Kettle Moraine State forest through Kewauksum Cambellsport then head north crossing over 41 just south of Lomira and paralleling 41 to the west and crossing back under to get to the site adjacent to HWY 41. Clearance requirements are the cause of all this back country driving. Jesse F., Green Bay WI

.

The cars used for the wind turbine towers are leased by the shipper and they are not used for any other service. You might be interested to note though that some of these cars are from the old Brillion and Forest Junction. When empty these cars go back as a group to their originating point.
The cars are mostly PREX cars if my memory serves me right. Bob Hainstock

.

A large amount of those (empty westbound) PREX flats came in on 405 on Monday. (Feb 4) Douglas New Brighton, MN
