Stockton Highway 18

Stockton Highway 18

Here's a link to Heartland bicycle Club web page about the crossing. News in May 2009 is this crossing won't be closed after all. I repeat this link at the botto of this page.

My page was wrote in 2008.

Stockton is 3 miles east of Stevens Point.
Old Highway 18 parallels the tracks, and crosses over here.
If the railroad could close this crossing, it would be safer.
Also, they could extend Orchard siding east.

Traffic surveys show about 300 ? people a day use the crossing.
And bicycle groups like this road.
Stockton is at far right / east side of picture. Can see grain elevator legs from here.

It took a while for me to find the few pictures I've taken at this crossing. These three are from November 2002.

Orchard siding is beyond switch,
on north / right side.
(there is an orchard nearby).

This is just west of the road crossing.

.

note angle of red vehicle on north side.
Visibility is bad, highway climbs up to RR.

Stop signs ok, but drivers have to turn and pull up close to see trains.
No recent accidents here.

.
I put name labels on the picture below.

I drew a red / black dotted line to show one solution if crossing is closed. there were Rumors of just building a new highway north of the tracks. It would only need to be a half mile long to connect to existing roads.

if built, that new road would T into road north of this railroad bridge.

This picture is from 2005 while the railroad was replacing the beams.

But low clearance prevents farm machinery from passing.

Picture is from 2005, but clearance is still the same in 2008.
Alternate routes are four miles longer.

Aerial picture notes: I stitched pictures to make a panoramic, from kite.
Premier 14 sled. wind NW, varied to North, 7 to 17 mph. Not enough lift 1/4 of the time.
